About Costa Rica
Costa Rica, nestled in the heart of Central America, is a small but vibrant country known for its
stunning natural beauty and commitment to environmental conservation. Bordered by Nicaragua to the
north and Panama to the south, with coastlines along both the Caribbean Sea to the east and the
Pacific Ocean to the west, Costa Rica offers a diverse range of ecosystems within its relatively
compact size.
Covering an area of approximately 51,100 square kilometers (19,700 square miles), Costa Rica is
about the size of the state of West Virginia in the United States. Despite its small size, Costa
Rica is renowned for its rich biodiversity, with lush rainforests, towering mountains, active
volcanoes, and pristine beaches.
The backbone of Costa Rica's geography is formed by the Central American mountain ranges, with
the Cordillera Central and the Cordillera de Talamanca running through the country from northwest to
southeast. These mountain ranges are home to numerous active and dormant volcanoes, including the
iconic Arenal Volcano.
In addition to its mountainous terrain, Costa Rica boasts extensive coastal plains along both
the Caribbean and Pacific coasts. These coastal regions are characterized by tropical rainforests,
mangrove swamps, and fertile agricultural land.
Costa Rica's commitment to environmental conservation is evident in its extensive network of
national parks and protected areas, which encompass over 25% of the country's land area. These
protected areas support a staggering array of wildlife, including howler monkeys, sloths, toucans,
and jaguars, making Costa Rica a paradise for eco-tourists and nature enthusiasts alike.
Overall, Costa Rica's geography plays a central role in shaping its identity as a global leader
in sustainable tourism and environmental stewardship, making it a beacon of natural beauty and
biodiversity in the Americas.
